Autumn 2013 Book Challenge: The Preliminary List

When I host a book challenge, I like to host a little "pre-link-up" party so everyone can share what they're planning to read. This link-up is not mandatory to join the challenge, and you're not obligated to read the books you list today. It's just a fun way to see what other people are planning to read and get some ideas for categories you're struggling with! See my preliminary list after the jump.

5 points: Read a book that does not have "the," "a" or "an" in the title. — Cinder, Marissa Meyer (387 pages)

10: Read a book that has been featured in Oprah's Book Club. The Road, Cormac McCarthy (241 pages)
10: Read a book that takes place in the state where you currently live. The Joy Luck Club, Amy Tan (288 pages) (California)
15: Read an epistolary novel. The Boy Next Door, Meg Cabot (379 pages)
15: Read a book first published in 2013. Allegiant, Veronica Roth (544 pages)
15: Read a book with something spooky in the title. House of Sand and Fog, Andre Dubus III (365 pages)
20: Read a book with "air," "water," "earth" or "fire" in the title. Into Thin Air, Jon Krakauer (333 pages)
20: Read a book on which a television series has been based. Orange is the New Black, Piper Kerman (298 pages)
25: Read a fiction book that has someone’s first and last name in the title. The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, David Wroblewski (608 pages)
30: Read two books by the same author. — Divergent & Insurgent, Veronica Roth (487 & 496 pages)
35: Read a fiction and nonfiction book about the same topic. The Red Queen, Philippa Gregory (382 pages) & The Sexual History of London, Catharine Arnold (333 pages)

One question: Do you think "fog" is spooky enough to work for that category? What about things like "dark," "night" or "twilight"? Be honest! I don't want you to think I'm getting off easy on my own challenge. ;)

If you missed the initial announcement post for the challenge, click here to see the full list of categories and rules. I also made a button for the challenge, so you can get the code for that in the original post. If you also made a preliminary list for the challenge, please link up below! I can't wait to see what y'all plan to read. :)

  1. I think 'fog' works for that category. I'm planning on reading Dark Places by Gillian Flynn for that one. I'll link up with my full list tomorrow. This is my first reading challenge to participate in. I'm excited!

  2. I also think fog is fine, I wasn't sure about that either but I'm ready Dark Places along with Katy! I figured as long as you could tell from the title that it was probably a mystery it would work.

I hope you enjoy the Divergent series, I devoured them earlier this spring. Interested in how the Allegiant is as well.

    Excited to participate start reading!

  3. I don't find fog scary, but it's an individual taste!

I couldn't pick just one book for most of my categories; I had to list several possibilities. LOL I like planning it out though, so when I'm ready for my next book, I have a list waiting!

  4. Thanks for this!!! I really needed an excuse to look into new books and I found it here. I love the categories. It is so fun. I'm sure I will fail dismally, but I'm happy to try and read a few at least. Fog is spooky because it hides things and gets the imagination going. I think it is perfect.

  6. I hate fog! It is definitely spooky. I still have a few I need to figure out so I'll be browsing other people's lists. I love your choices for the last one (35 points). Those look interesting. I may have to steal that idea. :)

  7. I love reading your posts about your book linkups. I haven't yet decided I should actually participate. I need to finish up the Anne series first!

  9. I haven't read The Boy Next Door in many years, but I do remember enjoying it! I am also reading The Red Queen, but I'm using it for the tv series category thanks to the Showtime miniseries based on the White Queen, The Red Queen, and the White Princess. (It's awesome, by the way! I would totally recommend it if you haven't checked it out yet) Oh, and I think fog totally counts, by the way. No worries there! Thanks for hosting such a fun challenge!

  10. I've been working on my post for days. HaHa! I had a question about the last category. If I read a Christmas novel and then a Christmas related non-fiction, would that count? I do a lot of holiday reading during Christmas.
