First, let me start by saying I can't think of any place I would absolutely not visit. If I could visit every single country in the world, I think that would be phenomenal. That being said, there are two countries that come to mind right away when I think of places I really wouldn't mind not seeing before I die: England and Australia.
When I mention that I'm not too hot about these destinations, people always assume it's because I think they'll be too much like America. That is part of it, sure—they're both English-speaking and Westernized countries—but I still know both countries have cool things to offer that I can't get in the States, so that's not the entire reason I'm not dying to see them. And, I do really want to go to Ireland, which is English-speaking, so that reasoning isn't consistent. I still can't put my finger on exactly what it is about them that seems so blah, though. I'm especially surprised that I don't have more desire to visit England, especially London, because of its rich history. I'm fascinated by history (I even have a bachelor's degree in European history), but I guess I'd be more stoked about seeing England if it were the 16th century.
Of course, I would love to visit either of these countries if A) someone else was paying for it, or B) I was visiting a nearby country and it was convenient. As mentioned above, I really do want to visit Ireland, and New Zealand seems pretty neat too, so England and Australia could very well be quick visits during those trips. Sorry I couldn't be more specific with why I chose England and Australia, but they just don't do it for my sense of wanderlust. I can't wait to read your posts today!
Next week: What is one item you absolutely cannot travel without? What is one thing you’ve packed before but never will again? Also feel free to share any other packing tips or stories you have, or write about your own topic! See you next Tuesday.

I agree with you a lot here. If i"m going to travel that far, I'd rather go to a number of different countries in Europe.
ReplyDeleteI have similar feelings about England. I'd definitely visit if I had the chance while in Europe, but there are a lot of other places I'd want to see first. I agree that visiting England back in the day would have been pretty cool.
ReplyDeleteI have sero interested in Asia, just doesnt do anything for me. I would love to go to Paris and South Africa!
ReplyDeleteIndia used to be on that list. But, then I visited it and LOVED it. Maybe that is the best thing about not really be excited to go there...the actuality is almost always better than the expectation.
